Environmental and Wildlife Stewardship Statement – Thames Valley Park & Reading Town Regatta

We are committed to conducting rowing activity in a way that protects and respects the natural environment, particularly the wildlife that inhabits the River Thames.

We recognise that this stretch of river is home to a variety of species, including swans, which are a protected and valued part of the ecosystem. In line with British Rowing guidance on swans and rowing, we actively promote safe and responsible behaviour on the water at all times. This includes maintaining a safe distance from swans and their nests, avoiding sudden or aggressive manoeuvres near wildlife, and ensuring crews are briefed on appropriate conduct before racing and training.

Our event planning incorporates measures to minimise disturbance, with marshals, officials, and safety crews instructed to monitor wildlife presence and intervene where possible to protect both competitors and animals.

By working in compliance with British Rowing’s guidance, we aim to ensure that our regattas not only provide a high-quality sporting experience but also uphold our shared responsibility to preserve the river environment for future generations.

Partnership with Swan Support

We are proud to work in partnership with Swan Support, a specialist wildlife organisation dedicated to the rescue, care, and protection of swans and other waterfowl along the River Thames.

As part of this partnership, Swan Support representatives attend our events at Thames Valley Park and Reading Town, providing expert oversight and support to ensure the wellbeing of local wildlife throughout the regatta. Their presence allows for informed responses should any wildlife require assistance, and helps to guide our crews, officials, and volunteers in best practice around swan awareness and safety.

This collaboration strengthens our commitment to responsible rowing, ensuring that our events operate to the highest standards of environmental care. By working closely with Swan Support, we aim to balance competitive sport with proactive wildlife protection, contributing to the long-term health of the river and its ecosystems.
